Apartheid in South AFrica


During the seventeenth century the English and Dutch colonized South Africa."South Africa is a country blessed with an abundance of natural resources including fertile farmlands and unique mineral resources. South African mines are world leaders in the production of diamonds and gold as well as strategic metals such as platinum. The climate is mild, reportedly resembling the San Francisco bay area weather more than anywhere in the world" ("The History of Apartheid in South Africa").
Racial segregation and the supremacy of whites had been traditionally accepted in South Africa prior to 1948, but a policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups in the Republic of South Africa came into existence between 1948 and 1991.This policy was better known as apartheid, which when looked up in the dictionary literally means "racial segregation".This policy of government separated the whites from the non-whites, it was thought that by segregating the racial groups in South Africa, it could become a more peaceful place ("Apartheid In South Africa" 1).
According to Encyclopedia.com Apartheid had begun when Daniel F. Malan was elected in the general election of 1948.Encyclopedia.com also claims that when Malan came to power with his Afrikaner Nationalist party platform, they were the ones that introduced the policy of apartheid."The purpose of apartheid was separation of the races: not only of whites from nonwhites, but also of nonwhites from each other, and, among the Africans (called Bantu in South Africa), of one group from another" (Encyclopedia.com).
Northstar.com states, "The South African government was controlled by Afrikaners who were of British decent but the Black Africans made up 75% of the population". Northstar.com also maintains that the majority of non-white people in South Africa were most affected…
